The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) of Hampton Roads recognizes the challenges associated with military life and provides support programs specially designed to meet the unique needs of military families.
With only 12 locations nationwide, we offer an array of no-cost and low-cost programs and services, unlike your neighborhood Y.
We do NOT have paid memberships, pools, or fitness equipment.
We have five core programs that focus primarily on child development initiatives to enhance cognitive development and social-emotional growth and connection while providing skills to strengthen resilience.
Our impact on the lives of our families is real.
In 2021, we were able to serve 11,341 service members and their families to provide 45,942 points of service and reach all 5 branches of service as well as our veteran community within Coastal Virginia.

The Program: The School-Age Care Counselor at the ASYMCA Five Star Kids Academy will work closely with peers, under the direct supervision of the School-Age Care Director, to implement high-quality child care and summer camp programs that meet the social-emotional needs of students, ages 4-12 years.
Facilitators provide a FUN, happy, and safe learning environment that promotes academic growth and personal character development through interactive, engaging activities.
The Position: We’re looking for a Part-Time School-Age Care Counselor in Virginia Beach who is enthusiastic, caring, child-centered individual who wants to grow with our organization and has a passion for the wellbeing and development of the military child.
The pay is up to $15.
00 per hour and up to 28 hours per week consisting of a Monday through Friday schedule between 6:30 a.
m.
to 6:00 p.
m.
at our Regional Office location in Virginia Beach, VA.
We offer paid in-house training, as well as CPR, DHO and Online Trainings for Certifications.
We provide all lesson plans, materials, supplies, and support for staff, students and families.
Education and Experience Required: High School Diploma or GED or verification of completion of a home school program approved by the state and six months of supervised programmatic experience in group care of children; OR Some college credits and six months of supervised programmatic experience in the group care of children; OR An endorsement, associate’s or bachelor's degree in a child-related field such as, but not limited to, elementary education, nursing, or recreation from a college or university, and one year of programmatic experience (preferred).
Other Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
Complete background checks.
Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
, bend, stand for long periods of time and walk up and down stairs; and Knowledge of military life, a plus.
Responsibilities: Incorporate the YMCA character values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty during all program sessions while maintaining a positive, enthusiastic, and professional demeanor around students, parents, and school staff.
Maintain an organized, safe learning environment, securing all ASYMCA materials and supplies.
Stay engaged with students and encourage problem-solving conflict resolution, and self-regulation.
Supervise children at all times, making sure no child is left unattended (regularly complete name-face counts).
Assist students with homework and provide enriching activities to assist children with everyday challenges; and Implement high-quality, age appropriate lessons that are relevant and of interest to children in your care.

Priority shall be given to providing needed programs and services for junior enlisted personnel, both single and married, and their family members.
