Singer 648 Touch & Sew Sewing Machine W/ Pedal and Carry Case - $25 (Lynnhaven)

I bought this at one of my regular auctions.
The machine worked fine.
Press pedal and needle moves up and down real fast.
I got it to my shop and when I plugged it in it did not immediately work.
I started pressing buttons and moving levers.
I can hear the motor try to run but the needle is not moving up and down.
It's like someone is pressing the brakes.
I only pressed the foot pedal a moment since I don't want to mess anything up.
I broke the needle when i initally put a pair of pants in the feed area to sew up a hole in my pocket.
Thisnwould have been my first sewing effort since about 1974.
I don't know what I'm doing.
So, please call to instruct me what to do if you want me to test further.
I can only say it worked when I bought it, I did not drop it or anything like that.
The wheel on the back, I know, should be able to turn to make needle move up and down slowly, but it feels like someone is pressing the brakes.
